The 2026 Prix Galien USA recognized AEYE Health’s AEYE-DS artificial intelligence system, developed for diabetic eye screenings, with its award for Best Digital Health Solution. The company says the technology delivers results within one minute using a portable fundus camera, without requiring medical interpretation.

Key points
  • AEYE-DS won the digital health award at the 2026 Prix Galien USA.
  • The system is an FDA-authorized autonomous AI diagnostic solution.
  • Diabetic eye screening can be completed within one minute without pupil dilation.
  • It was tested on more than 1200 patients in three Phase III clinical trials.
  • AEYE-X is an investigational platform being developed to assess more than 100 health conditions.

Selected from 25 nominees

AEYE Health announced on November 3 that its FDA-authorized AEYE-DS system had won the 2026 Prix Galien USA award in the Best Digital Health Solution category. According to the company’s statement, the award recognizes the team that developed the technology, as well as Dr. Zack Dvey-Aharon, co-founder and CEO of AEYE Health.

AEYE-DS was selected from 25 nominees in the category. The nominees included OpenEvidence, RapidAI, Cleerly, Medable, Owkin and Evinova, among others. The Prix Galien was founded in 1970 to recognize innovations in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices and digital health.

A one-minute test directly in primary care

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. According to the source, timely screening could prevent much of this vision loss, yet many patients do not attend their annual eye examinations. Traditional testing requires a separate appointment with an ophthalmologist, which can involve limited capacity, long waits, costs and inconvenience.

AEYE-DS was designed to enable testing as part of routine primary care visits. According to the company, nurses and medical assistants can also use the system. The test requires one image per eye, without pupil dilation. Results can be available within one minute, and the system does not require medical interpretation.

The solution works with both portable and tabletop devices, which the company says allows it to be deployed in a range of care settings. AEYE Health reports an imageability rate of more than 99 percent, meaning it claims a diagnostic result can be produced for almost every patient.

Also tested in clinical trials

AEYE-DS was validated in three prospective, controlled, multicenter pivotal Phase III clinical trials. More than 1200 patients took part in the studies. According to data released by the company, the system’s sensitivity ranged from 92 to 93 percent, specificity ranged from 89 to 94 percent, and imageability exceeded 99 percent.

AEYE Health says AEYE-DS is operating in dozens of major healthcare systems and hospitals across the United States. According to the statement, integrating the system with electronic health records simplifies documentation, referrals and reimbursement processes.

AEYE Health targets additional applications

Alongside AEYE-DS, the company is also developing AEYE-X, an ophthalmic platform currently in the investigational phase. It would use retinal images to perform non-invasive health assessments. According to the statement, AEYE-X can assess more than 100 cardiovascular, metabolic, neurological and ophthalmic conditions, although the platform remains investigational.

Accepting the award, Dr. Zack Dvey-Aharon said: “Winning the Prix Galien award is one of the greatest honors of my professional life and an extraordinary recognition of the work of the AEYE Health team.” He said AEYE-DS is already helping healthcare providers in the United States prevent blindness. For users, the award could mean that diabetic eye screening may become available in more care settings, as part of routine medical visits, under the deployment model described in the source.
