OpenAI to acquire Pierre, maker of Code Storage and Git tools

November 4, 2026, 15:30Source: OpenAI

OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company, the company behind Code Storage and a group of open-source developer tools used in the Codex app. The companies say the deal will help adapt Git workflows for software teams working with coding agents.

Key points
  • OpenAI plans to acquire Pierre Computer Company.
  • Pierre develops Code Storage and open-source Git tools.
  • Trees and Diffs are used in the Codex app.
  • Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open-source.
  • The deal requires customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

A focus on Git workflows for coding agents

OpenAI said on November 4, 2026, that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc. Pierre develops Code Storage, as well as open-source tools for navigating, reviewing and managing code.

According to OpenAI, developers already encounter Pierre technology when they browse files or review a change in the Codex app. The company said Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries are used in Codex, where they support file navigation and code review.

OpenAI said its own engineering work has shown that systems built around Git need to evolve as more software development happens in parallel. The company also pointed to Pando, its in-house source control backend for engineers and agents, which it said it discussed earlier this week.

Pierre’s tools are already used in Codex

Pierre’s Trees library is designed to help developers navigate a project’s files, while Diffs shows what has changed. OpenAI said both tools are built to handle large volumes of code and maintain performance during review and navigation.

Diffs also includes an Edit mode, which lets reviewers fix a line of code where they identify a problem. Pierre recently released Highlights, a syntax highlighter that updates while a developer types or an agent streams code.

OpenAI said the same team that created an editor inside a diff also designed the API for Code Storage. The service allows applications to store code and track its history using Git.

What the acquisition means for Code Storage and Codex

OpenAI said it wants to bring Pierre’s work together with Codex and develop products and platforms for software teams. Its stated ambition is to advance source control and connect the code a company ships with the decisions made by its people.

Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open-source, and OpenAI said it will continue contributing to them. Customers will also be able to continue using Code Storage after the acquisition closes while OpenAI works to bring its features and functionality into Codex.

The transaction has not yet closed. OpenAI said completion is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until closing, OpenAI and Pierre will remain separate and independent companies.
