VMS platforms take on a broader workforce role
SAP’s November 4 feature presents the SIA landscape as evidence that vendor management systems are moving beyond systems of record. The report describes VMS platforms as increasingly strategic workforce platforms, with roles in process automation, compliance and risk management, advanced analytics, and data-driven decision-making.
Adoption is already widespread in the regions covered by the report. According to SIA, 88% of surveyed organizations in the Americas and 86% in Europe use a VMS. Another 12% in each region are likely to explore implementation over the next two years. Global VMS spend under management reached US$303 billion in 2025, up 7% year over year.
For organizations managing external workers, suppliers and services, the shift raises expectations for connected data and broader visibility into workforce and spend decisions.
Strong scores in analytics and services procurement
SAP Fieldglass received a 4.93 out of 5 score for reporting and analytics in the SIA assessment. SAP says the capabilities covered workforce analytics, supplier performance, statement-of-work visibility and workforce planning. The report’s emphasis on connected, well-governed data reflects the role that information quality plays in reporting, predictive analytics, workforce intelligence and AI.
The platform also scored 4.96 for statement-of-work and services procurement. SIA identifies services procurement as a growing strategic priority, while statement-of-work spending represents 39% of spend and only 13% of client programs currently manage it inside their VMS platform.
That gap points to a challenge for organizations that manage project teams, specialized expertise and service providers outside systems used for contingent workers. Bringing workforce and services data closer together can give businesses more visibility into suppliers, budgets, milestones, deliverables, compliance and performance.
Global coverage and AI remain central to the market
SAP says Fieldglass earned top scores in areas including supplier and engagement management, compliance and audit, and mobile enablement. The SIA field guide identifies the platform as the leader in geographic coverage, with support for more than 190 countries and 21 languages.
The assessment also gave SAP Fieldglass the second-highest embedded AI score in its overall summary. SAP describes capabilities intended to connect data, intelligence and automation across workforce and procurement processes. At the same time, SIA says adoption of VMS AI remains measured, with buyers seeking transparency, configurability, human oversight and clearer evidence of business value.
For users, the findings frame the next stage of VMS development around decision support rather than task assistance alone. SAP’s account of the report argues that useful AI will depend on a strong data foundation, governance and connectivity across the enterprise, while global platforms must combine consistency with flexibility for local requirements.
